We are inviting submissions to our EXHIBITION SPACE from artists engaged in representing borders and border crossings.
There are extraordinary efforts being made by refugee artists, migrants, and scholars to create and represent work on border-crossing, but until now, there has been no international journal devoted specifically to the products of such efforts. Just as border-crossing is a process, so too is the creation of work designed to represent it. As such, we are also interested in the process whereby artists make work, and the experience they hope to represent and convey. We will design digital spaces that can be adapted to any medium, including photography, visual art, performance art, painting, sculpting, dance, choreography or animation.
We are also creating REFLECTION SPACES for artists, scholars, activists and policy makers to address crucial concerns:
In what ways are global migrations inscribed onto artistic and humanistic works?
What role can art, humanistic works and creative leisurely activities play in the lives of migrants?
How is the exhibition and museum world being changed by globally migrating artists, artworks, and art theories?
How can the cultural remains, imprints, and layering produced by global migration be decoded or preserved?
What can artistic or aesthetic work say about border crossing that is different from anthropological, geographical, political or sociological approaches?
Reflection pieces will be connected to the exhibition space, to create unexpected spaces of overlap.
As a collaborative publishing platform, PubPub supports authors communicating in new, multimedia, and experimental ways. Contours is using the functionalities available on PubPub to enhance submissions, as well as the expertise of the PubPub team to consult and brainstorm with authors.
Once a proposal is accepted, authors will have the chance to schedule a call with our editors and someone from the PubPub team to discuss multimedia or interactive elements. Potential authors are encouraged to note some ideas for interactivity and reader engagement beyond words on a page in their submissions. Authors are responsible for creating these elements, while PubPub will advise on possibilities and implementation.
